Meet Tom

Former LEAD apprentice Tom O’Boyle has realised his ambition of managing his own team of engineers in his new role as engineering manager at our Whatley quarry in Somerset.

Tom had completed an engineering apprenticeship in a different industry when he discovered an advertisement for our LEAD programme online: “I knew a friend of mine had completed the scheme, so I called them to discuss it,” he said.

“I liked what I heard so applied and was lucky enough to be offered a job. Even though starting at Hanson meant retraining, I thought the opportunity to work for a market leader with global connections was too good to turn down.”

Tom started in 2016 at our Ingleton quarry in north Yorkshire before becoming a project manager on two separate projects: rolling out a quality control system across all aggregates processing sites and overseeing the reopening of Weeford quarry in Staffordshire. He started his new role at Whatley in April 2022.

“I’ve always had a real passion for engineering, processes and continuous improvements and hoped that one day I’d be able to manage my own team of engineers, and I’m very fortunate that I now do,” said Tom.

“People think that maintenance is just about fixing things, but it’s much more than that. Best in class maintenance is about improving equipment reliability and longevity to deliver better plant performance and more effective cost control to help Hanson be more competitive. We achieve this by working as a team to analyse data, find solutions to problems, create plans for improvements and put them into practice.”
