The department of 21, headed by Marian Garfield, delivers a professional regulatory and advisory service to all business lines; audits and develops our Integrated Management System (IMS); and leads the drive to develop a trained and competent workforce.
The team is responsible for HSE (health, safety and environment) compliance, sharing best practice across the business and risk management control. On a day-to-day basis this involves investigating incidents, managing operational change, legal compliance and addressing behaviour and culture within the business.
“Due to the nature of what we do, discretion when dealing with sensitive information is a key attribute for all members of the team,” said Marian.
“Experience in a HSE role and membership of IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety & Health) and/or IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment) are also required, while strong communication and leadership skills, commercial awareness and flexibility are also desirable.”
The team works collaboratively with operational site managers to proactively identify risks and supports the business in its aspiration to achieve zero harm.
Another key development has been the introduction of Heidelberg Materials’s Health and Wellbeing strategy: a company-wide initiative to improve the health and wellbeing of our employees, including mental health awareness, education and support.
