Technical careers at Heidelberg Materials
Technical support is vitally important to our customers and our 18-strong team offers a bespoke service on all cement and cementitious issues.
We provide support before, during and after a project to ensure the concrete mix delivers all requirements. This includes advice, information and technical support on everything from product data and case studies to lab trials and product testing.
The team, headed by national technical manager Simon Chudley, includes 12 who work at Heidelberg Materials’s national laboratory in Scunthorpe and six in technical services.
“The size and experience of our technical team sets us apart,” said Simon, who has worked in the industry for more than 20 years.
“We are responsible for providing laboratory testing to our cement, Regen (ground granulated blastfurnace slag) and packed products operations teams, as well as providing customer support and information for technical sales.”
There are a number of different roles within the department so the qualifications required varies. A science-related background and/or qualification is desirable for all positions and those looking for more senior roles should be working towards a qualification in advanced concrete technology or hold a degree in a science-based subject.
All members of the team need to have the ability to work on their own initiative, be organised, trustworthy and good communicators, and be able to work to tight timescales.
“I want people to develop through the department to ensure we have a stable and trained workforce,” said Simon. “The opportunity to progress is there: the department has seen people start as laboratory technicians and work their way up to technical development managers.”
