Graduate Trainee Manager Rhys Edwards
Education and initial career steps
I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Business Economics. Like many new graduates, I faced the daunting question of what to do next. I explored various graduate programs across different fields, searching for the right fit. Heidelberg Materials caught my attention due to the breadth and diversity of its business lines. The company's extensive operations and comprehensive graduate program, which offers robust support even for those who relocate, made it an attractive choice.
My first year at Heidelberg Materials
Now, having completed my first year as a graduate at Heidelberg Materials, I can confidently say that joining this program was one of the best decisions I’ve made. My role has primarily been within the concrete business line, but I've also had the chance to gain experience in aggregates, cement, recycling, asphalt, and contracting. This exposure to various sectors has been an exciting and invaluable opportunity, far beyond the scope I imagined.
Before applying to this graduate scheme, I envisioned myself in a suit and tie every day, working a traditional corporate office job. However, my time at Heidelberg Materials has involved visiting various sites and engaging in diverse activities, which has opened my eyes to a dynamic mix of office and site work. This variety has made my graduate scheme fly by, as no two days are the same.
Engaging with senior management
One of the standout features of the graduate program at Heidelberg Materials is the unparalleled accessibility to senior management. As graduates, we have the privilege of arranging face-to-face meetings with directors from each business line. During these sessions, we discuss their career journeys and gain valuable insights into various aspects of the industry.
A particularly remarkable opportunity has been our interactions with Heidelberg Materials CEO Simon Willis. The chance to engage directly with the CEO is a rare and invaluable experience, one that many of my university peers in other graduate schemes do not have. These interactions have been incredibly inspiring and educational, providing us with a broader understanding of the company's operations and strategic direction.
Rotational Experience
Throughout the year, I’ve participated in rotations across operations, technical, and commercial departments. Each area has its unique positives and challenges.
The operations rotation was unexpectedly fascinating as it gave me a hands-on understanding of the logistical and practical aspects of our business, from production to distribution. Working in technical roles provided insight into the innovation and quality control that underpin our products. It was a chance to appreciate the meticulous standards required in our industry.
The commercial rotation has been where I’ve felt most aligned. The blend of strategy, market analysis, and customer interaction suits my skills and interests. This is the area I see myself exploring further and possibly making my long-term career.
My future at Heidelberg Materials
Heidelberg Materials offers a wealth of opportunities across its diverse business lines and roles. The company's commitment to development and innovation ensures I will find the perfect fit. While I believe my future lies in the commercial sector, this graduate scheme has also sparked an interest in operations. The experience and support I've received so far have laid a solid foundation for a fulfilling career.
In summary, my time as a graduate at Heidelberg Materials has been an enriching journey. From the comprehensive rotations to the supportive environment and the invaluable exposure to senior leaders, every aspect has contributed to my professional growth. I am excited to continue this journey and discover where my path will lead within this diverse and dynamic company.
